After nearly a decade of Tory rule, we have seen people all across the country suffering. Since they only care about one group of people, the elite, we have seen massive levels of inequalities. The gap between the rich and the poor has grown wider. Now is our chance to get rid of this horrible disease that’s been plaguing this country. An election that has to be fought on all fronts, not just Brexit. Remaining or leaving won't create real change. Only a Labour government can provide long lasting changes that can benefit everyone. Whether it's policies for the NHS or the environment, a Labour government will move this country forward.
Ever since the Tories have been in charge, they have implemented a cruel policy of austerity. This policy was implemented as a response to the Great Recession. We have seen funding cut and withdrawn from all kinds of services which people rely on. The NHS, the police service, education etc. are just a number of services which have suffered under Tory rule. Even though services have been cut, affecting the lives of millions of Brits, the elites have not been affected by austerity as they ride high above us. Only a Labour government can truly bring an end to austerity. Tories will continue austerity, to allow their Brexit plan to “work”. Lib Dems were the ones that allowed austerity to happen by getting in bed with the Tories. A Labour government will put back and add funding to services which are crying out for help.
One of these underfunded services is the NHS. The National Health Service is the shining light of this country. For me it is the best thing about our country. I am not a patriotic person, but I am proud of our NHS. When I read stories about the American healthcare system, it really does make me sad and shocked. These people literally have to break their bank to survive. How can people be made to choose between living or financial stability? Health care is a human right, not a privilege. Everyone should be given the right care and treatment. When I read people's stories about the NHS, I am filled with pride. These people are going through a traumatic stage in their lives, but the support they received from the NHS is amazing. All that care and treatment, without paying a penny. Everything supported by the taxpayer. One life saved by the NHS is a life saved by everyone.
Unfortunately, we are heading down a dangerous path with all these cuts to the NHS. The NHS is struggling. Long queues and overworked nurses and doctors mean the NHS is not working at optimum level. This has been caused by massive cuts. On top of that, we are risking nurses and doctors being deported with a Tory Brexit. With each day, we are turning more into the American system. We’re already seeing parts of the NHS being sold off to the highest bidder. At this rate we will end up with privatised health care in the near future. Frankly, the only way the Tories will succeed with their Brexit plan is to Americanise the health care system in this country. We must protect all of our health care services, including mental health care services. We have seen many institutions having their funding cut, even after assurances from the government that they won’t be. In 2015-16, a study by Kings Fund showed 40% of services saw their budget cut. We have also seen a report by NatCen Social Research which stated that a lack of mental health support for the LGBT+ community was a a result of austerity. We have to stop this from happening. We must protect our NHS with everything we’ve got. We must protect doctors, nurses, staff members and patients. When a person needs treatment, they should be able to receive it without checking their bank account. Only a Labour government can bring the NHS back to its hay days by ending privatisation and adding much needed funding.
The Tories will say they are the party to reduce crime. What they won’t tell you is that they caused an increase in crime in the first place. Since 2010, there has been a drop in the number of police officers on our streets, as a result of Tory cuts. Their objective now is to increase the number of officers, but only the figure before the cuts. However, that will not bring a reduction to crime. That will stop a few people from actually going ahead with the crime. If you want meaningful change and for crime to stop, then you need to stop crime in the long term. Stop people from ever thinking of going into crime. How do we do that? Well, start with the youth. They’re the ones that are most likely to get in with the wrong crowds and start their criminal life. By giving all kids a good education, it will allow them to have more options in life. Kids with better education are less likely to go down the criminal road. Increase funding for youth services and after school clubs. Give kids something to do after 3pm, when school finishes. Let them join clubs and youth centres where they can learn life lessons and have fun at the same time. As youth services have had their funding cut, kids are more likely to hang about, getting in with the wrong crowds. Finally, give people good paying jobs, with a roof over their head. Bring people out of poverty. We have seen an increase in people living in poverty including the number of children living in poverty. By bringing people out of poverty, we will see a drop in crime rates. A Labour government will increase funding for education and youth services. They will bring people, including children, out of poverty. Finally, they will increase the number of police officers and police jobs, who are so crucial in the running of the police service.
For me, what really shows that the Tories don’t care about the people in this country is by looking at the increasing levels of poverty. In 2017-18, Social Metrics Commission found 14.3 million people living in poverty in the UK. Of which, 4.6 million were children. That’s 22% of all people and 34% of children living in poverty. On top of that, 49% of people in poverty are in persistent poverty, meaning they have been in poverty for two of the last three years. We live in a society where having a job is no longer enough, since 4 million British workers live in poverty. So many people in the UK have become reliant on food banks to keep them and their kids fed. In 2008, the UK only had 22 food banks. Now there are over 2000. 1.6 million food parcels were given out in 2018-19. People can’t even afford to feed themselves anymore. That is dreadful. These are some damning figures for one of the richest nations in the world. How can so many people, including children, be left to live in poverty, living off food banks? The most damning statistic is the number of people that have died due to austerity. According to the British Medical Journal, 120,000 people have died as a result of austerity. That is blood on the hands of the Tory party and their enablers, the Liberal Democrats. People paid for the choices made by the Tories and the Lib Dems with their lives. Millions of people suffered, and thousands died in the last decade, as the rich and powerful carried on playing their games.
There is only one party that can create real change. That is the Labour Party. Remaining or leaving the EU will not fix anything. To create long lasting meaningful change, we need systematic changes. Environmental polices are so important in the way we move forward. The Tories plan on a net zero carbon policy by 2050, whilst the Lib Dems are targeting 2045. Labour on the other hand, under the Green New Deal, will plan on 2030 to accomplish net zero carbon. Investing in the NHS is a major part of Labour. Bringing people out of poverty by addressing the inequality in society in a people's budget. All this, and much more, can be achieved by getting the Tories out and replacing them with the Labour Party.
