As we remember the victims of the Holocaust, we must never forget the events that took place that led to one of the most brutal regimes in history. We must implement the lessons from Germany between the years of 1918 and 1945, as well as the failures of the rest of the world, whose lack of actions allowed such a brutal regime to take over.
The best way to remember the victims are through our actions. The fight against fascism is a never ending one. It did not end in 1945. It has continued to this day. We are clearly seeing a rise in far-right and fascist activity, all across the globe. Whether it is in the UK, America or India, there are many within our governments that want to supress the rights of minorities. At the moment, they are winning.
It is quite alarming to see the amount of criticism anti-fascist organisations receive compared to neo-Nazis. When neo-Nazis spread their propaganda, it is seen as their freedom of speech, and free will. However, when anti-fascist organisations, retaliate, it is seen as an attack on freedom of speech. Media outlets and politicians constantly attack these organisations for the tactics they use but never speak out against neo-Nazis and the message they spread. In fact, neo-Nazis are given a platform to spread their propaganda. This is how Germany allowed fascism to fester and spread. Fascist should never be given a platform to spread their ideology.
Hatred fascist have for people goes beyond just ethnicity. They attack people on a number of things. They attack people based on their way of life. Any lifestyle which is different to theirs is wrong. Fascism is the ultimate attack on freedom and an attack on the human race. That is why so many different types of people were the victims of the holocaust. The Nazis discriminated people based on their ethnicity, disability, sexuality and religion.
Britain also had a fascism problem in the 1930s and 40s. Whilst Oswald Mosely was mobilising and recruiting people for his dangerous organisation, people from all backgrounds worked together in their fight against fascism. The battle of Cable Street, a memorable event, where socialist, communist, Jews and other groups worked together to stop a British Union of Fascist march through the street of London. Anti-fascist groups created roadblocks and then confronted the police, who tried to clear the roads to allow the march to take place. As demonstrators fought with the police, women started to attack the police from their homes, by throwing down objects. In the end, the fascist march was called off. This was one of many battles that took place across the UK and Europe, where people from all walks of life came together to fight the fascist and stop them from spreading their hatred.
Currently, all across India, the fight against fascism rages on. Millions are protesting against Modi’s fascist regime, which is trying to supress the rights of minorities. The Citizen Amendment Act is a discriminatory policy and a form of religious persecution. Throughout Modi’s political career, he has constantly attacked Muslims. By annexing Kashmir, and implementing CAA, Modi has made it his goal to deprive Muslims from any rights. His supporters want to change India into a land just for Hindus. They are trying to wipe the cultural and religious diversity India holds. This is the ultimate goal of fascism.
There is no point in remembering the victims of the Holocaust, if you don’t remember the reasons they died. Your actions are the best way to remember them. These people were slaughtered because of their lifestyle. Their ethnicity, religion, disability and sexuality were the reason why they died. Anyone who spoke out against the Nazis were also killed. There are many similarities between now and the 1930s. People being attacked for these same reasons. They may not always be physical. Many attacks are carried out by politicians, in the form of policies and legislation. Also, neo-Nazis are freely spreading their hatred and allowed a platform on the mainstream medias. This is how we are remembering the victims of the Holocaust. More needs to be done now to allow people from all backgrounds and lifestyle to live in a free and safe society.
